In this series, we look at things that can be done to improve the RV water system ...
I have always hated the noise that the RV pump makes. It seems to vibrate and echo throughout the trailer. I would rather listen to the kids whine .... well, maybe not but you know what I mean. Even two drops from the faucet will start it up. I always wonder if flushing the toilet will wake someone up at night. It was just by chance that I came accross a web page where someone else felt the same way. Mark's Fulltime RV Adventure provided information on his solution to the problem. Mark's solution was the installation of a small water pressuer tank. These tanks are used in all well pump system in cottages and homes. The tank prevents the pump from cycling too much and maintains a constant water pressure. Now the pump comes on only when the pressure drops too low. You can flush the toilet, wash your hands, get a drink of water and the pump will not be required. Upon your next trip to the bathroom, it will probably kick in to replenish the reserve tank. I printed Mark's article and went off to the Home Depot. I showed the staff and asked for help. The did not know what a RV was when I made reference to the type of tubing in RVs. This simple task now became tough because I did not know "exactly" what to ask for. What I needed was a shopping list with part numbers. A list that can be handed to the plumbing clerk without explanation. Here's my shopping list ..... 1 - tank 1 - FIP reducing coupling 3/4" x 1/2" 1 - 3/8" ID x 1/2" MPT adapter 1 - 1/2" OD (3/8" ID) TEE ? - feet of tubing These parts are easy to find. The assembly can now be tucked away in one of the RV compartments and "TEE" into the existing cold water line. Reference pictures 1 through 5
